Minecraft server.properties Settings and Parameter Guide

The most commonly used parameters, their effects, and performance recommendations for Minecraft's core server.properties configuration file.

Beginner5 minUpdated:26 October 2026

In brief

  • Edit the server.properties file directly through the file manager in the panel.
  • Keep parameters like view-distance balanced to maintain optimal CPU and memory usage.
  • A server restart is mandatory for any configuration changes to take effect.

What you need

  • Access to the file manager in the panel
  • The server.properties file in the server root directory

Accessing and Editing server.properties#

When a Minecraft server is started for the first time, a text configuration file named server.properties is generated in the root directory. This file dictates game rules, player capacity, and networking settings. To edit it, navigate to the file manager in the panel and open server.properties. Save your edits once finished.

Most Frequently Used server.properties Parameters#

ParameterFunction and EffectExample Value
motdControls the message of the day displayed below the server name in the multiplayer menu.Minecraft Server
max-playersLimits the maximum number of players that can connect at the same time.20
difficultySets the game difficulty (peaceful, easy, normal, hard).normal
gamemodeChooses the default game mode for new players (survival, creative, adventure, spectator).survival
view-distanceControls the chunk radius sent by the server to connected players.8
simulation-distanceDefines the chunk radius around players where ticks, entities, and physics are simulated.6
online-modeEnforces authentication against Mojang session servers to verify official accounts.true
white-listRestricts server access exclusively to players present on the whitelist.false
pvpDetermines whether players can inflict combat damage on each other.true
level-seedThe seed value utilized for procedural world terrain generation upon first creation.482019482
server-portThe networking port on which the server listens; must NOT be modified from the panel allocation.25565

View Distance and Performance Considerations#

The view-distance setting dictates the number of chunks loaded into memory and transmitted per player. The total chunk count scales quadratically with radius: a distance of 8 loads approximately 289 chunks per player, whereas a distance of 16 loads 1089 chunks. Elevated view distances dramatically increase CPU workload and RAM consumption. To ensure optimal performance, keep view-distance between 6 and 10, and keep simulation-distance between 4 and 6.
